Logan County Autism Cadre

Toolkit of Resources and Support

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 68 children in the United States has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with boys identified at a rate 5 times more often than girls (CDC website, March 2014).  With this latest statistic, nearly half of the children with autism have average or above average intellectual ability (an IQ above 85).

Logan County strives to provide special education services to all children with respect to the individual and his or her families.  In the spring of 2009, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and the Kentucky Autism Training Center (KATC) partnered to establish a statewide autism cadre with the following objectives in mind:

  1. Provide on-going training to district level staff on evidence-based practices for students with ASD so they could provide training at the district level
  2. Establish networks of support between professionals from different districts and special education cooperatives regions
  3. Establish local problem solving teams at the district level across Kentucky

Logan County has established a District Autism Cadre that oversees the technical assistance and guidance to the building level autism teams.  Each school within the District has a building autism teams, composed of various staff members, including an administrator, special education and regular education teachers, and paraprofessionals.
